According to reports, the National Football League (NFL) has agreed to a mediated settlement of $765 million in connection with a concussion lawsuit filed in 2011 by more than 4,500 former professional football players.  In the lawsuit, the former players allege that the league concealed the long-term health effects of concussions and other game-related head injuries while simultaneously glorifying the violent hits that generally cause such wounds.  The case was initially filed in Pennsylvania by a number of former NFL players and relatives who claim the players now suffer from dementia disorders, Alzheimer’s disease, depression, and other neurological ailments as a result of hits sustained while playing football.  Under the terms of the settlement, the league agreed to compensate former players who now suffer from certain brain injuries, provide funds for medical examinations, and earmark $10 million for further medical research. The terms of the settlement are now awaiting approval by a federal judge.
